The Caretta-Caretta Turtle

One of the most popular attractions on the island is the nesting ground for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), also known as the "turtle of Caretta Caretta." These sea turtles are an endangered species and are protected by the Greek government. Each year, thousands of tourists flock to Zakynthos to witness the nesting and hatching of these magnificent creatures. The turtles usually start nesting in May and continue until August. The eggs hatch after about 60 days, and the baby turtles make their way to the sea.

The most popular spot to see the sea turtles on Zakynthos is at Laganas Bay, where the National Marine Park of Zakynthos is located. This bay is considered one of the most important nesting sites for the loggerhead sea turtle in the Mediterranean.
